  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 5 tablespoons granulated sugar

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine brown sugar, flour, and salt. Stir continuously until mixed well.
  2. Gradually add milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
  3. Stir in butter until melted completely.
  4. Temper the egg yolks by mixing in a small amount of hot mixture. Then return the yolks to the saucepan and cook until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
